Food trailer cell phone application

This project is a proposal for a new cell phone application that would allow users to view gluten or carbohydrate free dishes available for purchase at Austin's food trailers. The experience of the app user is as follows:

The user begins by choosing the part of town they would like to buy their food from, which brings up a list of food trailers in the area. By selecting a particular food vendor, the user is presented with basic information about the restaurant, such as their address and the type of food available. The user can then opt to view a menu of the gluten or carb-free dishes offered by that vendor, or they may return to the list of restaurants to select another option.

A field guide to corrosion

The idea behind this project was to create a field guide to an unusual topic that is both informative and design conscious. I chose to design a guide to corrosion because it something that I find visually interesting and love to photograph. The book cover is featured below with a couple of sample spreads, as well as a link to view the book.

Parking proposal

These are my contributions to a group project outlining a hypothetical proposal to improve the parking situation at St. Edwards. The group decided on a tiered parking system with a valet option. I was in charge of the implementation portion of the proposal, which included:

1. Color-coded parking lot signs

2. A poster to promote the new parking system

3. A newspaper ad

4. A sign for the valet stand

Locating place: a motion piece

This is a short motion piece that attempts to capture the mood of a particular neighborhood. The objects and images were taken directly from the neighborhood and re-framed in a new context.

Locating place book

The idea behind the locating place books is to address the general question of what creates, identifies, and defines cities and places, and then focus in on a particular neighborhood.

In order to reflect the idea of the city as an ever evolving entity with no beginning and no end within the actual structure of the book, I used a book structure that also had no beginning or end. It is essentially a wooden dowel with three book sections hanging on metal rings, allowing the pages to be viewed in many different combinations, without a significant opening or closing point.

How to change a tire

This design piece outlines the basic steps required to change a tire. The idea behind this project was to create a form of instructional design that is both useful and aesthetically appealing. In its final form, the instructions are laminated and functional. The poster can fit under a car floor mat and and can also be used to kneel on while changing the tire.

Freshwater conservation concept map

The idea behind the concept map is to plot out essential information about a given subject in a manner that is easily understood and visually appealing. The topic in this case is fresh water use.

Weather report motion piece

The purpose of this project was to create an animated weather report for four cities over a three day period. There are three reports within the movie, each presenting the same weather information categorized in a different manner. The information in this video is organized by location, population, and alphabetical order, respectively.

Dada buttons

The idea behind this project was to create buttons for a hypothetical museum exhibit on the Dada movement. The designs include visual qualities derived from the original movement, with a more modern take. Also included is a promotion poster for the exhibit.

Amendment postcards

The basis of these designs is the amendment prohibiting cruel and unusual punishment. The images are composites of fragments from a multitude of other images.

Documenting the letter H

The objective of this project was to perceive a single letter strictly as a design element, discarding any understanding of the letter beyond its physical appearance. I then explored different ways of interpreting the letter, while still maintaining a sense of cohesion among the individual forms.

Transformations

The idea behind this project was to use pieces of scanned objects and images to create something entirely new. For example, images of gas pumps and fragments of scanned household tools were used as limbs for some of the creatures.

This poster was created in order to promote a hypothetical event featuring the works of different designers. The theme of the event is "modern design," and the focus was on creating a visually appealing and appropriate piece that incorporated all of the necessary information.

Symbol methodology

The goal of this project was to create a series of abstract symbols that enhance and clarify the concept of conservation. The final symbols were derived from a process of creating, combining, and refining various elements.

Scavenger hunt
